Why Do Japanese women Fear the Sun sooo much? Darth Vaders and Bee Keeper are everywhere!!

For most Japanese women, getting a suntan is one of the scariest things about summer.
Unlike in many Western countries where a golden tan might be proof of an amazing beach holiday, in Japan it’s quite the opposite.
You see, for many Japanese women who care deeply about their appearance, a suntan means something terrifying: dark spots and freckles!
In other words… a total skincare disaster!!!

That’s why during the summer, it’s not unusual to see Japanese women fully covered up like Darth Vader—long sleeves, big hats, sunglasses, gloves, and even face covers!
We’re not heading into battle… just trying to avoid the sun. 😂

As for me? I’m way too lazy to go full Vader mode.
So instead, I rely on sunscreen, sunglasses, and even some sun-protection supplements!

I love Tokyo—but let’s be honest, Tokyo summers are brutal.
They’re hot, humid, and ridiculously sticky.
But if I had to say something positive… well, an ice-cold beer really quenches my thirst in this crazy heat! 🍺😆

If you ever visit Japan in the summer, don’t be surprised if you see women walking around looking like Darth Vader… or maybe even beekeepers! 😄
It’s all part of our summer survival strategy.

Some even say that this extreme dedication to avoiding the sun might be one reason why many Japanese people look younger than their actual age.
Maybe our sun-avoiding lifestyle is actually one of the secrets behind Japan’s age-defying reputation.
Just something to think about! 😉

By the way, a parasol can be a great way to soften the harsh summer sun, so give it a try if you’re visiting Japan! 😊
You can easily find umbrellas that work for both sun and rain at almost any shop here.
